Tell me, out of all of the appliances in your home, what the ones that you think you can live without? Your washing machine, your stove, your blender?
I used to be one of those people who was all “Hand washing dishes isn’t a big deal!” Right. Just say no. I truly cannot live without my Frigidaire dishwasher.
So what changed my mind about needing a dishwasher? It was a throwback to a moment I like to call “That time I was 9 months pregnant with our first child and our dishwasher broke”. We were living in the condo in Toronto and I was already a typical soon to be first time over panicked Mom. Then our dishwasher motor (from a different brand that came with the condo) gave out and I remember going “Ok it won’t be so bad”. Very long story short, we wound up not having a dishwasher for the almost the next half year.
And it was hell.
Do you know what it’s like having a newborn, not having a clue what you’re doing and being a zombie to boot? First time parenting is hard enough because you are completely terrified you are doing everything wrong. Then you learn how many messes little babies make. Little babies then become toddlers who make bigger messes who need to learn how to eat. Bottles need to be sterilized. Food needs to be pureed and made. Your own meals that you’re cooking, wind up half not eaten on the counter tops because of your crying newborn thus adding to your dish pile. You’d sell your soul for 30 minutes of sleep. The last thing you want to be doing is washing dishes.
I remember my (our) fingers looking like prunes for months. It was this never ending rotation of stuff. Drying dishes on the counter. More dishes in the sink. Crying baby. Repeat. By the time we got a replacement it was staggering how much time we got back to ourselves. Needless to say the first thing we bought when we moved to our first home was a dishwasher. It was an earlier Frigidaire model, which we paid forward to friends after I joined the Frigidaire #TestDriveMoms team and we were lucky to get the Frigidaire Orbit Clean Gallery dishwasher to try out.
What do I like best about my the Orbit Clean Gallery Frigidaire dishwasher? Outside of all of the modern and energy saving features it has that I wrote about in full review of it, for me it continues to be the simple fact that I do not have to wash dishes. Period.
In fact here is a random list of everything you can do aside from washing dishes:
– Play with your kids.
– Watch a movie with your family.
– Bake cookies and make a mess in the kitchen knowing you do not have to clean up all of the dishes and pots and utensils you are using to make those cookies.
– Ride a bike, go skiing, go swimming, fly a kite.
– Read a book, put your feet up and have a glass of wine. Have another glass of wine because the Frigidaire dishwasher you have contains special grips just to hold your wine glasses. True story.
– Go shopping, go for a walk, get together with friends.
– Do fun crafts or a home decor project.
– Drink some more wine.
– Bake a cake to celebrate you not having to wash dishes.
– Write some blog posts about why everyone needs a dishwasher and how grateful you are for your Frigidaire Orbit Clean Gallery dishwasher.
Your time is important.
How you spend it should matter.
And if you have an appliance that gives you that time to do things in your day that give you more value (than say washing dirty dishes), it is a wonderful thing to have.
Our dishwasher by the way, is going to have a new spot in our kitchen soon, as we are hoping to get the kitchen renovation started in the near future. Like I said in the full Frigidaire Gallery Dishwasher review, this dishwasher is too sexy for this kitchen (the Barney Stinson Cheerleader effect).
And I look forward to sharing that in a series of posts I will nickname “How to renovate a kitchen and not get divorced”.
